Guru
In our family,
music literally runs in the blood, I learned the Violin from my guru,
my father Shri S.V. Tagde, a vocalist, and who mastered his art under
the tutelage of his father Pt. Vishwanath Tagde. My father adopted a unique
technique to teach me the Violin. He would sing Indian Classical songs
and I would follow him on my Violin. This process helped me to understand
the nuances of Indian Classical Music and even today, I just need to take
my Violin in my hand for it to start singing. I mainly play the Gayaki
Ang on the Violin, orienting towards the great Gwalior Gharana.
My uncle Dr. Ramesh Tagde, who is a disciple of the legendry Violinist,
late Pt. V. G. Jog, had a great influence on me and I owe to him many
of the various techniques of playing the Violin. After learning the initial
methods of playing the violin from Dr. Ramesh Tagde, I was drawn to the
Violin playing genius of Dr. M. S. Gopalakrishnan and Dr. N. Rajam. And
they have inspired me like no other. I have been listening to their cassettes
& CDs and attending their live performances ever since I can remember,
and because of which their violin playing styles have influenced my musical
mind and playing style to a great extent.
But it was under my father’s guidance that my talent blossomed and I owe
my sound technique and my love for Indian classical music in general and
the Violin in particular, to him.
